2020 Novaripa Agronika Montepulciano
Abruzzo, Italy

Novaripa uses their extensive co-op of 200+ organic and sustainable grape growers to assemble this delicious offering where Montepulciano is the star of the show. A red grape variety grown widely in central Italy, the most famous and highly regarded examples come from Abruzzo, and, more specifically, Chieti. Produced without any oak influence, hand-harvested Montepulciano undergoes a long and slow fermentation in stainless steel before spending a full year resting ahead of bottling. This winemaking technique preserves the primary fruit flavours and freshness of the wine, lending to some extra juicy aromatics of blackberry, cherry and liquorice. The palate is ripe and round with black plum, blackberry and red currant notes hitting alongside some subtle tannins.

2019 Domaine de Séailles Cubik Rouge
Côtes de Gascogne, France

Cubik is a soft and fruity red wine that surfaces from an ocean of white grapes. The vineyards around Domaine Seailles are famous for producing Armagnac, and are therefore planted mostly to white grapes, which go into the local spirit or still white wines. Séailles has had such success with their red wine that they can't make enough. In addition to their own fruit, they now purchase organically-farmed grapes from their neighbours to satisfy the demand while keeping the same excellent quality. A medium-bodied mix of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, this entices with blackberry, smoke, baking spices and white pepper. We like it saucy BBQ chicken wings and heaping plates of smoked ribs.

2021 Rosewood Winery Blau 1L
Niagara

100% Blaufränkisch from the gang at Rosewood Winery. This grape usually stars in the far-flung corners of Eastern Europe and throughout Austria but here it comes from humble cool-climate vineyards in Niagara. Don't think too much of the change of locale, this is still as juicy, as vervy and as fun as its European cousins. Whole berry fermented, matured for 5 months in neutral French oak barrels and bottled into party-starting 1L format. 

Under 10% ABV, this is an easy-going summer sipper and patio ripper. Slightly spicy notes dance around the palate with sour cherry, wild summer strawberry and just-ripe cranberry. There's a suggestion of bitterness and tannin - perhaps a tea leaf quality? - near the finish but in a very pleasing and balancing way to the juicy, electric red fruit vibes.
