2020 Novaripa Agronika Passerina
Abruzzo, Italy

Abruzzo, on Italy's eastern coast along the Adriatic, consistently delivers some of the country's most loved and inspired wines. Centuries of autonomy from the influence of Italy's other highly regarded winemaking regions means Abruzzo is a standalone in the country's mosaic of impressive wines. Passerina is an ancient and traditional white grape that has been used in central Italy for hundreds of years. Novaripa's co-op of 200+ organic and sustainable grape-growers is at the heart of this crowd-pleasing white. Ripe Bosc pear and notes of lime hit the nose. Mid-weight and fruit driven on the palate, with pear and lime notes mixing with ripe white grapefruit. There's some acidity here but this is a pretty textbook example of Passerina, which is a fairly low acid wine. Balance is achieved with a salty tang on the finish that is characteristic of the minerality. A salty, citrusy sipper with great texture and drinkability. An every day drinking beauty of exceptional value if there ever was one.

2019 Rosewood Winery There Be Dragons
Beamsville, Niagara, Ontario

100% Sauvignon Blanc. Fermented using non-selected ambient yeast and aged for 18-months on its natural lees in neutral French oak puncheons. Bottled without fining or filtration. What a wild ride this is! There's some Sauterne-ish qualities here with honeyed, waxy elements playing over some slightly flowery, citrusy qualities. Then it goes 180 with a salty, tangy finish blending in pleasing herbaceousness (classic Savvy B, as some might say) and a heavy dose of fresh fruits and zippy cool climate acidity. This can reward with lengthy aging and can cellar up to 20+ years.

2020 Clos du Tue-Boeuf Vin Blanc
Loire, France

Part of the original natural wine movement in France, Clos du Tue-Boeuf are making some of the Loire’s most interesting wines, with many native, and near-extinct varietals. This is Loire Sauvignon that will make you purr with delight, it's chalky and mineral, and not overtly flamboyant. The nose is fruity with citrus and cut pineapple, alongside hints of aniseed. On the palate it is taut and exudes lemony aromas with a long, pleasing finish. Wow, this is fresh, tightly wound and compact with lovely zip and directness. So drinkable, it’s refreshing, and satisfying, and a wine to remind us that Sauvignon blanc is so much more than the mono-stylistic wines that have over-saturated the Aussie market over the past few decades.
