Heliocentric Wines, Same River Twice, 2020
Ventoux, Southern Rhône
Vin de France
Heliocentric Wines was founded in 2019 by Brit James Dunstan. After more than 20 years as a wine agent and importer based in Tokyo he settled in Ventoux, where the family always spent their summer holidays in his childhood. Heliocentric Wines is a négociant company through and through: James does not own any vineyards or a wine cellar and he does not plan on it either. His advantage is that he knows Rhône, Provence and Languedoc like the back of his hand, has long-lasting relationships with a myriad of producers and thus also has in-depth knowledge of the producers’ vineyard and cellar work.
This is the third vintage of red which continues in the vein of the 2018 and 2019 releases. It captures the aromatic richness and freshness of the terroir and is made with a light touch for easy drinkability. Grenache provides the flesh and black cherry, red berry fruit and herbes de Provence while Syrah provides the cool yet spicy notes of blackberry, cassis and black coffee. The remaining parts of the blend, Mourvèdre and Carignan, add some sweet spicy complexity. Dry, medium-bodied, with juicy acidity and smooth, delicious tannins. Clean and persistent with a fun, invigorating sense of energy. We adore this wine and have a sneaking suspicion you will too!
Vines of an average age of 40-50 years provide the following blend for this wine: Grenache Noir 75%, Syrah 15%, Mourvèdre, Carignan 10%. Fermented using natural yeasts in steel tank. On skins for 14 days. No additives, no manipulations and no added sulfites at bottling. 10 months of ageing in concrete tanks. Production limited to 18,000 bottles.
Perfect food pairings include fattier steaks like ribeyes but also virtually any grilled red meat. This is also mega tasty with dry-rubbed or saucy BBQ, mushrooms, roasted chicken/turkey or even a homely chili.
