Judith Beck, Pink, 2020

Burgenland, Austria

If someone like Judith Beck lives not just according to a postal address, but actually amidst the vines, then you can be sure that she’s developed a deep relationship to her own vineyards. Combine that with a wicked resumé that included time at Cos d'Estournel in France and Errazuriz in Chile and you've got one hell of a recipe for some primo juice.

Pink blends Blaufrankish and Zweigelt into a racy and vivid package of red cherry, raspberry, currants, just-ripe white peaches, mineral purity and a zesty, crisp acidity. Expressive, everyday rosé that you can drink year round. All organic and biodynamic farming is part of the vineyard management calculus.

Food pairing recommendations include apps like herb and goat cheese puff pastry bites; grilled eggplant with feta, nuts and a punchy garlic yogurt; canned seafood - think conservas instead of plain tuna - with chunks of rustic bread; or sausage in a bun a la Bitzinger's in Vienna - a sausage made with smoked pork and cheese stuffed in a French roll with simple condiments.
