Livia Fontana, Barbera d&

Livia Fontana, Barbera d'Alba Superiore, 2018

Barolo, Piemonte
Barbera d'Alba Superiore DOC

Livia inherited the passion for viticulture from her father Ettore and she in her turn transmits with love and enthusiasm the values of those who preceded her in these vineyards. The winery is managed by Livia Fontana and her two sons, Michele and Lorenzo, who have been preceded by seven generations of the Fontana family, spanning 200 years.

The winery consists of a central nucleus in Castiglione Falletto and ten hectares of vineyards located primarily near the winery and in the Bussia area of Monforte d’Alba. The region's most well-known grapes are grown: Nebbiolo for Barolo, Barbera, and in the nearby Roero area the white grape Arneis.

Hand-picked grapes come from a 3 hectare site in Castiglione Falletto, at 300-350m above sea level. The wine is aged in traditional oak barrels for a period of 30 months, followed by a short resting period in their underground cellar.

Bright ruby red, very intense perfume of cherry morphing into strawberry and blackberry. Notes of sweet spices like clove and timut pepper, with its strong smell of citrus rind, lead into a balsamic crescendo. Fresh on the palate with a full-bodied, well-balanced, persistent finish.

“A fruity Barbera with dark berry, spice and dried-fruit character. Hints of dark earth, too. Full body, round tannins and a fruity finish. Rather structured for a Barbera. Drink or hold.” James Suckling - 92 pts - September 2021
