2018 Enfield Wine Co., Haynes Vineyard Syrah
Coombsville AVA, California

Enfield Wine Co. is the family project of John Lockwood and Amy Seese, with a focus on producing wines of personality. They do not subscribe to the ideal of the perfect wine, but to the notion that the very best wines tell a unique story.

Tasting notes from John:

2018 was a remarkable vintage in California, with a long, even ripening season. For Haynes this meant a balance of generous fruit and focused acidity. The 2018 Syrah is extremely refined, with powerful aromatics of iron and flowers balanced with delicacy on the palate and enough acid to make this wine both refreshing and seriously cellar worthy. There is a coiled tension on the finish that is a joy to experience right now, but also hints at future potential. This is an excellent vintage and those who lay a few bottles down should be rewarded.

Impressive stuff and perfectly suited to Northern RhĂ´ne lovers who are looking for something comparable from the new world.

2019 Vinca Minor Los Carneros Cabernet Sauvignon
Los Carneros, Sonoma, California

Vinca Minor is a natural winery located in Berkeley, California owned by Jason Edward Charles and Emily O'Hara Charles. Vinca Minor started as a way to explore the intersection between farmer, winemaker and artist. They work exclusively with small growers producing fruit from organic, dry-framed, old vines—primarily in Mendocino. In the cellar, they make wine as naturally as possible, always working with indigenous yeast, never filtering or fining. Their bottles feature label artwork from local artists as a way to not only showcase their work but highlight the vibe of the juice inside. Beautiful old vine Cabernet Sauvignon tucked away on the Sonoma side of Los Carneros. Farmed organically by Diego and Shaun of Les Lunes Wines. Fermented with natural yeasts and aged for 9 months in old French oak barrels. Bright crunchy red fruits and soft tannins.

2018 Enfield Wine Co. Heron Lake Pinot Noir
Heron Lake, California

Driven by soil first and foremost, Enfield Wine Co. seeks out vineyards that possess a distinct and powerful sense of place – across region, grape variety, and vine age. Working only with small vineyards and independent growers, every step of the process is guided by the intent to maximize this character of terroir. Grapes are harvested for balance and the wines are all given the chance to ferment naturally.

Despite its location just a few miles from downtown Napa, few vineyards are as isolated and unique as Heron Lake. Perched on a high, rocky outpost above San Pablo Bay, the vineyard catches the ocean breeze as it rises up into the Vaca Mountains. The vines are planted in extremely shallow and rocky volcanic soils and this intersection of cool coastal climate and rugged soil profile creates wines that express a daring combination of freshness, acidity, depth and texture. Aromatic intensity, clear and precise. The sweet spice of the stems is playing in he background though emerges as the wine opens up. Quartz minerality. Rose petal, red fruits, moss, tangerine peel, pennyroyal, black tea and a sublime quartz mineral finish.
