2020 Quinta do Lagar Novo 5a White Blend
Lisbon, Portugal

Fresh & vibrant alert y'all. A mish-mash of Marsanne, Viognier, Chardonnay and the native Portuguese varietal Arinto, this racy white is balanced and finely textured. There's a harmony of fruity and heavy citrus flavours with a dash of green tea complexity and fresh exotic fruits. There's intensity and lively acidity but with balance and finesse. This is fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks, so no oak for the wood-in-white-wine-averse. Ideal as an aperitif but there's enough there to go hand in hand with a fresh salad, sushi, steamed and lightly seasoned seafoods or creamy pastas.

2021 João Tavares de Pina Rufia Branco
Dão DOC, Lisboa, Portugal
The Rufia Branco encompasses Encruzado, Cerceal, Malvasia, Bical and Arinto, aged for 8 months on the skins. Slightly tannic with a surprising note of celery salt on the nose, high acidity, refreshing, lots of apples and Asian pear aromatics too. There's a little apricot and some pleasant herbaceous aromas too. Complex but very inviting, a winning combination and a cool expression of what natural wines from Portugal are capable of. Perfect to drink with raw fish preparations, risotto with seafood, warm fish appetizers and light veggie pastas. We'd say sushi is kind of a slam dunk pairing here.

2021 Benjamin Taillandier Le Blanc
Vin de France, Caunes-Minervois, France

A combination of Grenache Gris, Grenache Blanc and Terret Gris. Benjamin's 20 hectare organic vineyards are resplendent in olive trees, fields and garrigue, that yield a great and pure fruit. Despite the practices of many of his counterparts in the region, Benjamin's bottles swim upstream against the current of highly concentrated and high alcohol wines. Light citrus aromas lead the way through a somewhat smoky minerality. The citrus flavours open the door to a world of fresh fennel, fresh white pear and white florality. The wine is dry and zippy with a youthful energy balancing the tension on the palate. A delicious goat or sheep's milk cheese suits this wine beautifully. Or go for a turkey burger, scallops in butter or even something casual like fish and chips with tartar sauce.
