2020 Quinta do Lagar Novo 5a White Blend
Fresh & vibrant alert y'all. A mish-mash of Marsanne, Viognier, Chardonnay and the native Portuguese varietal Arinto, this racy white is balanced and finely textured. There's a harmony of fruity and heavy citrus flavours with a dash of green tea complexity and fresh exotic fruits. There's intensity and lively acidity but with balance and finesse. This is fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks, so no oak for the wood-in-white-wine-averse. Ideal as an aperitif but enough there to go hand in hand with a fresh salad, sushi, steamed and lightly seasoned seafoods or creamy pastas.
Talk about Sicilian summer in a glass! A beautiful and inviting blend of Chardonnay (70%), Grillo and Viognier (15% each) from the organically farmed, historic family vineyards of the Di Giovannas in Contessa Entellina, western Sicily. A delicious mix of fruity and savoury elements, expressing ripe fruits like honeydew melon, white peach, lemon and hints of honey. There's some savoury Mediterranean herbs in the mix with considerable minerality (volcanic soils to thank for that) over top of the nice roundness and mouthfeel here. Despite the roundness from the Chardonnay and the pleasant honey notes, this definitely screams warm weather vibes. Recommended as an aperitif but there's some fun food pairings to explore like lobster rolls, poached shrimp, Insalate di Mare or a bucatini pasta con le sarde with all that delicious fresh sardine, fennel, pine nut and saffron.
Carbonic Maceration, a winemaking technique made famous in Beaujolais, is used in the production of this wine. After harvest, the whole clusters of grapes are fermented in a carbon dioxide rich environment which results in intensely fruity wines with low tannins. The palate is dominated by fruitiness with touches of florality and minerality intertwined with the fresh strawberry and raspberry flavours. There’s a nice nudge of acidity here with a softer, medium finish. Undeniably fresh and easy-drinking. Pair with pastas; marinated, grilled chicken dishes; creamy tomato risotto; or, a plate of roasted vegetables and wild mushrooms.
