2020 Sierra de Toloño Blanco
Rioja Alavesa DOCa, Spain

Sierra de Toloño is a small winery based out of the majestic Rioja region of Spain with vineyards in the village of Villabuena. Sandra Bravo of Sierra de Toloño is recognized as one of the top winemakers in the region and has received the honor of Young Winemaker of the Year from acclaimed wine critic Tim Atkin’s Rioja Classification in 2019.
With time spent making wine in Bordeaux, New Zealand, Tuscany and California, Sandra uses her experience to craft wines of exception and distinction. Here she uses amphora, concrete vessels and stainless steel to vinify and age the grapes which come from elevation. The results are precise, intensely pure and possessed of a vision to make delicate wines reflective of the true terroir potential.
The primary aromas of white flowers give way to an elegant and complex background, with subtle toasted notes and pastry notes. In the mouth it is enveloping and silky, with a powerful acidity that allows a long-lasting aftertaste. Put this up against a village-level white Burgundy and prepare to be blown away by how good this wine really is.
Pair with white wine steamed mussels; grilled octopus; coconut curry; filet of sole with beurre blanc; or, rich, creamy cheeses like Délice de Bourgogne.

2019 Sierra de Toloño Tempranillo
Rioja Alavesa DOCa, Spain

Blueberry and dark cherry fruit are front and center, wafting out of the glass with their intensely fragrant aromas. There is a strong floral and spice component underpinning the beautiful fruit elements with a hint of pepper rounding out the just so slightly savoury profile of the wine. Fresh with savory tannins and big jolts of acidity running through the intricate and complex finish. A home run on all accounts.
Pair with a Sunday roast leg of lamb, roasted potatoes, dark green vegetables and a red wine sauce with demi-glace and pan drippings. Buen provecho!

Praise: “I'm more and more at ease with the fruit from Rivas de Tereso," says Sandra Bravo of this isolated, high-altitude area on the Sonsierra. It shows in the wines, too. Very lightly wooded, this is a fresh, tangy, peppery style with savory tannins, racy acidity and floral, rose petal top notes.” 93pts - Tim Atkin MW

2019 Bodega Pirineos 3404 Red Blend
Somontano DO, Spain

The fruit of Bodega Pirineos’ 3404 comes from hard work and respect for the traditional Moristel and Garnacha varieties, which have been combined with magnificent Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. Named after Pico Añeto, a peak that rises to a dizzying altitude of 3,404 meters, soaring over the Somontano appellation. A lifted fresh and fruity red wine that allows for the full expression of Somontano to come through. Intense aroma with sweet notes of ripe red fruits, strawberries, wild flowers, chocolate, caramel, vanilla and red berries with a dash of spice. Velvety texture and fresh, with soft tannins on the palate.
Food pairings: burgers, pizza, red sauce pastas, rotisserie chicken with brown sauce (you know which one!)
