2021 Viña Valoria Tempranillo Blanco

Rioja is one of the world’s most famous wine growing regions and this winery, Bodegas Valoria, can brag that they’ve been producing wines from the area since the 60s….1860’s that is! That makes Valoria the fifth oldest producer in the region and one of only ten producers to be allowed to release “old vintages” from before 1980. Tempranillo Blanco is a mutation of the more well-known varietal Tempranillo, that only grows in the Rioja. Typically, it is bottled as a single varietal or blended with Malvasia and/or Viura. The 2021 vintage of Tempranillo Blanco was blended with both Malvasia and Viura to give it a highly aromatic perception of pear, green apple, pineapple, lemon-lime citrus and a floral midpoint. Bright acidity helps balance the wide mouthfeel and leads through a refreshing, thirst-quenching finish.

Maria Pinacho teamed up with enologist Ana Martin to revive vines planted in 1945 by her grandfather and a 14th Century cellar that is truly lost in time. The soil dates to the Miocene Epoch with deposits from the Tertiary Era. This combines with the influence from the Atlantic Ocean and wildly divergent climate conditions to engender unique terroir. Grapes are hand harvested from a low-yielding 75 year old vineyard planted by Aurelio Pinacho. These 2 women are committed to being true stewards of the land creating minimal intervention unique single vineyard wines expressive of their wild and rustic terroir. An expressive earthy red blending fine minerality and shady forest. Structured and balanced with great fruit character. Healthy acidity and a long finish.

2014 Viña Valoria Rioja Reserva

To be labelled Reserva it has to follow strict Rioja wine laws – aged for a minimum of 3 years including 12 months in oak (this one got all 36 months in American oak!). The result is truly classic Rioja with bold, powerful fruit mirrored by smoky, woody notes and wood spice. Firm tannins make this a perfect pairing with grilled flank steak and sautéed wild mushrooms.
