San Ferdinando, Ciliegiolo, 2020

Tuscany, Italy

San Ferdinando's estate is spread over 60 hectares in the heart of Tuscany in the area of Val di Chiana noted for its oil and wine production. The Grifoni family, inspired by the passion and by the respect for this land, purchased the farm in 1998. Their vineyards, at an altitude of 300 metres above sea level, occupy a total area of nine hectares and are planted with local Ciliegiolo, Sangiovese, Pugnitello and Vermentino.

Ciliegielo, which translates to "small cherry" in Italian, is typically used as a blending grape throughout Tuscany. On its own, it stands up beautifully to its formidable cousin Sangiovese - of which there are conflicting reports as to whether Ciliegiolo is a parent or offspring of that varietal. Either way, San Ferdinando have crafted a deliciously drinkable red with flavours of...you guessed it!...cherries, as well as raspberries, hints of rosemary and oregano, subtle spiciness and a lavender florality. Medium-bodied, soft tannins and juicy with big, refreshing acidity.

Serve cool, not cold!, and enjoy with medium hard cheeses, meaty fishes, tomato dishes or some simple pasta.
