2021 Folk Machine Pinot Noir
Central Coast California, USA
Central Coast AVA

One of many Kenny Likitprakong productions, including Hobo, Banyan, Camp, Edith & Ida and Ghostwriter. Folk Machine was created in 2005 almost strictly for the production of Pinot Noir but has since expanded to include all esoteric bottlings like Charbono, Carignan and other dreamy gems. The 2021 Central Coast Pinot Noir is a blend of Mission Ranch (Arroyo Seco) and Cedar Lane (Arroyo Seco) vineyards. The wine was aged in 2-6 year old French oak Burgundy barrels. This Pinot was very gently extracted during fermentation and pressed early to further minimize extraction leading to a quite pretty and standout vintage. The wine is elegant and lean but quintessentially California Pinot Noir with ethereal fruit and spice. Fun, easy-drinking and unpretentious - all the hallmarks of KL's productions. Pair with roast turkey, BBQ ribs, mushrooms, cheeses, beet salad, lamb chops, coq au vin...really the possibilities are endless.

2018 Beckham Estate Vineyard Estate Pinot Noir
Oregon, USA
Chehalem Mountains AVA

Located in the in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, the Beckham Estate was founded in the early-to-mid 2000s by a couple who originally had their hearts set on opening a ceramics studio. Not only is their Pinot Noir seen as a reference point for Oregon but they're also the foremost producer of clay amphorae in the US. Inspired by Elisabetta Foradori's choice of winemaking vessel and combining Andrew Beckham's background as a ceramics artist and ceramics professor, has brought an even greater renown to their amphorae production. Salivating aromas of cranberry, strawberry, rhubarb, and peppery herbs and spices underpin this savoury Pinot. The stem inclusion brings a note of baking spices and tarragon. The mouthfeel is tense and lively, with an acidic lift to counter the fruity deliciousness.

2020 Folk Machine Charbono
Central Coast California, USA
Suisun Valley AVA

From Kenny, founder of Hobo Wines/Folk Machine: "In California, there are primarily three heritage grapes, Zinfandel, Valdiguié, and Charbono. Of those, Zin is pretty widely planted, but Valdiguié and Charbono are sparse and ‘endangered’ if we don’t drink them. We’ve had eyes and ears open for a Charbono that we could foster. Around the Spring of 2013, we learned that Brian Babcock in Suisun Valley had a small two-acre block of Charbono that was just a few years old after being grafted over from Merlot. Turns out to be a great fit for the region. It is slow ripening even with the warm weather and holds acid. What more could we ask for? Typical for the grape, this wine is very dark in color and heavy in the nose, but it doesn’t live up to this expectation. It actually drinks very pretty, almost light. The tannin level is moderate given the way it looks and smells."

Expect fresh raspberry, slightly overripe strawberry, sweet violet, crushed stone minerality and a hiccup of spiciness. A beguiling red that feels like sleight of hand, where your expectations are defied by your senses.
