The term "historical" gets thrown around a lot in the wine world, with families staking claims to generational winemaking sometimes spanning hundreds of years. And while the Klein family have been continuously operating in Mosel, Germany since 1805, this winery has been in operation since 862AD. Yeah, we felt compelled to add AD to emphasize how absurdly historical this property is. That makes Staffelter Hof not only one of the oldest wineries in history but also one of the oldest companies in continuous operation. Today, the winery is helmed by Jan Klein, who took over in the early 2010s.
2022 Müller-Time Sanderstruck
Müller Time, Sanderstruck - featuring Bernie Sanders on guitar on the label. A 100% Müller-Thurgau, a quarter of which is in skin maceration and the rest in direct pressing. Notes of peach, apple and chamomile give way to a refreshing finish enhanced with subtle structuring bitters. The slate and schist soils bring a dazzling minerality which only prolongs the pleasure throughout the evening.
2022 Kiss Kiss Maddies Lips
A PetNat made from Pinot Noir and Pinot Madeleine - and a fun nod to Nirvana's "Molly's Lips" - this is the kind of sparkling wine that we'd gladly present as Exhibit A in the case for PetNat's return to prominence. Wild & tangy, creamy & refreshing, strawberry, redcurrant & bit of plum, beautiful grapefruit cutting through and a hint of spice on the finish. Somehow super fun and super serious at the same time. If we had to use just one word to describe this wine, it would be joy.
2022 Little Bastard
Jan has affectionately named it as such, as it is a blend of Riesling, Müller, Muscat and... Sauvignon blanc, a rather unusual grape variety in the Mosel Valley. The wine itself has a bold, vibrant bouquet with pronounced notes of ripe apricot and peach, interwoven with hints of citrus zest and a touch of tropical fruit. Floral nuances add a delicate layer of complexity, creating an intriguing fusion of fragrances that captures one’s attention.
