Antonio Madeira, Vinhas Velhas, 2017

Serra da Estrela, Dao
Portugal

Welcome to the wildly delicious, esoteric wines of Antonio Madeira, a winemaker of Portuguese decent, who was raised in France before returning to his home in the highlands of Portugal's Dao region to start his own label in 2011.

The vines for this wine range from 50-100 years of age. After rejuvenating some old, neglected vineyards high in the Serra da Estrela hills, Antonio set about producing a set of outstanding field blends that speak of his home. Biodynamic practices underpin the venture, as does a natural, Burgundian-inspired approach in the cellar.

This is energetic, medium-full bodied, filled with spice and crunchy, moreish tannin. Violets, plums, and crunchy dark cherry skins. Exotic, seductive and ethereal.

Food Pairings: Moroccan lamb meatballs, a beef tagine, firm aged cheese, roasted piri piri chicken.
