Stefan Voda, Moldova

An incredibly fascinating blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Saperavi and Rarǎ Neagrǎ that spends 18 months aging in French oak barriques. This is absolutely stunning and worthy of all the acclaim and international recognition it has received. Rich, sensuous and full of dark fruit aromatics, including ripe blackberries and juicy red plum, followed by mocha and anise character. The palate is lush and silky, with punchy but refined tannins, and a mouthful of black fruits, mocha, hard-stemmed herbs, roasted red pepper, sweet vanilla and a long, harmonious sensation of oak that prevails all the way throughout. This is deep and satisfying with a purity of fruit that reminds us instantly of great, classic Bordeaux. Enjoy with lamb, kebabs, grilled ribeye or any other rich red meats.

More Info

After 600 years of contiguous planting, Château Purcari started bottling under its iconic label in 1827. In 1878, Negru de Purcari, a blend featuring the indigenous Rara Neagra, was awarded a gold medal in a blind tasting at the Paris World Expo. Most believed it to be an exceptional new Bordeaux. This is not surprising, as the wine regions of Moldova sit at the same latitude as Bordeaux, their soils are similar and they share a lot of similar climactic conditions. At the turn of the century, the winery replanted 250 ha of vineyards, refreshing and retraining the vines with an eye towards crafting fine wines instead of the large volumes of inexpensive wines demanded by Moldova’s former largest export partner, Russia.
