Domaine des Sanzay, Les Poyeux, 2021

Loire, France
Saumur Champigny AOC

The Domaine was founded in 1880 and is now run by the 5th generation of Sanzays in the Loire valley, near the town of Saumur. Under the stewardship of Didier and Celine, and with the help of their son Ludovic, the estate has grown to 28 hectares and received official organic certification in 2019. Although it should be noted, since they live on the estate, they've had delicate and thoughtful agricultural practices since the early 90s.

100% Cabernet Franc coming from 40 year old vines in a place called Les Poyeux, planted on limestone sand, and with lower than average yields. This dances across the palate with generously ripe plums, cherries and raspberries, leading through a light violet moment and into an electric intensity, ending near the edge of bitterness. This is power and finesse combined. The tannins are noticeable but softened at the same time. The acidity intensifies the fruit flavours but doesn't overtake the balance of tannins. It's fleshy and opulent, with gorgeous mouthfeel and texture, blending into an understated silkiness.
