Castilla y Leon, Spain
Bierzo DO

Bodegas Mengoba is owned and run by Gregory Perez who graduated from the school of Oenology in his hometown of Bordeaux, France before going on to work with Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste and Chateau Cos d’Estournel. A pretty hefty resumé, to say the least. Gregory moved to the Spanish region of Bierzo and established Mengoba in 2007, working with the region's native varietals.

A wine pre-dominantly of Godello with 10% of Doña Blanca in the mix, it certainly evokes the style of Chardonnay. And, with the rising global prices of Chardonnay, it's no surprise that sommeliers and wine consumers alike are seeking out this beautiful varietal.

This is full of character and texture with a sort-of tang in the freshness of the wine. The fruit profile is fresh yet rich, dominated by yellow apples, ripe pears, ginger, white pepper and creaminess across the palate. There's a little hint of florality lingering in the background with nice pops of lemon-lime citrus. Mineral tension creeps in on the back half of the palate along with bright acidity and that magic of lees-aged texture.
