Rosso Toscano IGT
La Querce Seconda is the last winery in the north of the Chianti Classico, marking the northern boundary of the municipality of San Casciano. A small business run by Niccolò Bernabei and his Swedish-born wife Linda Sandkvist, the property includes 7 hectares, 3.6 of which are dedicated to the production of Chianti Classico and another small production that falls under the Chianti Colli Fiorentini denomination.
For years Niccolò has dedicated himself to painstaking work in the vineyard, recovering vineyards dating back to 1975. In addition to wine, the winery is an agritourism destination that welcomes tourists. In 1998, before taking over the reins of the family business, which had been left to Niccolò by his mother Monica Edlund, one of the first registered direct growers in Tuscany, the decision was made to take on another rented business that later joined the main farm, becoming a producer of extra virgin olive oil.
A pure Sangiovese expression with fermentation in stainless steel and aging for 12 months in a mix of small and large used French oak barrels. Grapes are harvested from a range of vines with up to 45 years of age. Virtually microscopic production of just 4,000 bottles in 2017.
There's a depth of flavour and intensity to this bottling with structure and elegance aplenty. Black currants, plums, ripe red cherries and spice dominate the palate. Light touches of balsamic and eucalyptus linger softly in the background to round out the profile. The tannins are powdery and well-integrated with a beautiful balance of classic Sangiovese acidity and a nice, long finish.
Pair with classic Italian dishes.
