Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOC
Established in 1984, Salcheto is the creation of viticulturist and winemaker, Michele Manelli. Michele’s genuine passion for refined and delicate wines has propelled this tiny estate into one of Montepulciano’s top producers. Though lesser known than Chianti Classico and Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile offers incredible value and an earlier drinking window for Tuscan wine lovers.
This wine comes entirely from the 15ha 'Salcheto' vineyard and each bottle of Nobile is made from 1 plant of Prugnolo Gentile - the local name in Montepulciano for Sangiovese. Hand-harvested, the wine spends 18 months aging in oak and another 6 months aging in bottle before release which puts it on par with Chianti Classico Riserva.
The 2019 vintage is bright and aromatic with tart and fresh red cherry, raspberry and red plums on the nose. On the palate, the cherry and raspberry are riper and fuller, with truffle, liquorice, cocoa and a light floral characteristic of roses rounding out the intense flavours. The tannins are soft and refined, backed up by vibrant, bracing acidity that achieves a great level of balance - in our eyes, a necessary characteristic of truly great wines. This is so focused and dynamic, a really sophisticated effort from the team at Salcheto.
Drink between 2022-2032. Serve at cellar temperature and decant at least 45 minutes ahead of consuming. Enjoy with a variety of grilled meats including chicken, beef, lamb, duck and boar, with red sauce pastas like lasagna, with braised mushroom dishes or with firm, aged Italian cheeses.
